Case Study
One homeowner approached us after experiencing several power outages that lasted for many hours. They wanted to invest in a reliable backup power solution and decided to install a Generac Home Standby Generator. After researching various options online, they contacted us for an estimate of the investment.
We provided them with detailed information about the installation process and the benefits of using Generac home standby generators. We also explained that our team of licensed electricians would handle every aspect of the installation process, from obtaining necessary permits to connecting the generator to their home’s electrical system and fuel source.
After reviewing our proposal and comparing it with other companies’ estimates, the homeowners chose us for the job. We scheduled the installation at their convenience and arrived promptly on the day agreed upon.
Installation Process
Site Assessment
The first step in installing the generator was to assess the site where it will be installed. This included determining the size of the generator needed, as well as identifying a safe and accessible location for installation, ensuring that the generator is far enough away from air inlets of the home not to allow the exhaust to enter.
Permits and Codes
Based on local regulations, permits may be required before installing a generator. Additionally, there may be specific codes that must be followed during installation to ensure that the system is safe and reliable. For this installation, we pulled the appropriate permits and followed all the required codes during the installation.
Fuel Source Selection
Standby generators can run on natural gas, propane, or diesel fuel. The fuel source you choose will impact installation requirements and ongoing maintenance needs. Here, we used natural gas.
Foundation Preparation
Before installing the generator, a pad must be provided for a level foundation. This pad should be sized appropriately based on the size of the generator being installed. We supplied a concrete pad but could have had a pad poured with concrete or provided a newer composite pad, or even created a bed of pea gravel.
Electrical Connections
An automatic transfer switch needed to be installed to connect the generator to the home’s electrical system. This switch allows the generator to automatically turn on within 15 seconds when an outage occurs and ensures that power is distributed safely throughout the home. We installed this transfer switch and tested all the connections.
Gas Line Installation
A gas line needed to be installed from the meter to the location of the generator, which we had installed.
System Testing
Once we had all the components installed, then we tested them to ensure that everything was functioning properly. This included testing both automatic startup and shutdown procedures, as well as ensuring that power was being distributed correctly throughout the client’s home. Then the house was set to operate off of the generator for 24hrs. After which, we returned to the home to do a complete service of the machine ie change the oil, oil filter, air filter, and spark plugs to ensure it will be ready for the time it is needed.
Ongoing Maintenance
Once your generator was installed, we advised our client that ongoing maintenance will be required and offered a maintenance and monitoring agreement to ensure that it continues to operate effectively. This can include regular oil changes, air filter replacements, and other routine tasks as recommended by the manufacturer as well as remote monitoring of the generator in case a problem arises. They have our number and can reach us when these maintenance tasks are required to be completed if they chose not to have it monitored.
Warranty Coverage
Finally, we went over the warranty coverage that is included with this generator installation. This coverage varies depending on the manufacturer and installer, but Generac is fantastic, and their warranty coverage is second to none.
Results
The homeowners were pleased with our professionalism throughout the entire process. They appreciated that we took care of everything from start to finish so they could focus on other things without worrying about their home’s electricity supply during an outage.
Since then, they have experienced several power outages but never had any issues thanks to their new Generac electric generator installed by us. They even referred some of their friends who were looking for similar solutions!
